Is Inguinal Hernia common in the right side for men?

Inguinal Hernia is the protrusion of the intestine and other abdominal tissues into the inguinal canal through a weak tissue near the groin. Inguinal Hernia can occur in the right or left or sometimes in both left and right, also called bilateral hernia. Some studies have found that the incidence of right side Hernia is slightly higher than the left side hernia.

The main reason attributed to the higher prevalence of right-side hernia is the delayed descent of the right testicle through the inguinal canal. The prevalence of right-side inguinal hernia was also found to be slightly higher in women where the occurrence of Inguinal Hernia itself was rare.

Why Hernia recurrence is more common among smokers?

Hernia Recurrence is associated with a number of risk factors. Several studies have pointed out that smoking is one of the risk factors for hernia recurrence. Some of the other risk factors include obesity, chronic cough, lifting heavy weights, application of strain during urination, severe constipation, etc.

Smoking is associated with recurrence of hernia because of three reasons. Smokers usually get a dry cough which can cause pressure to the repaired hernia thereby causing recurrence. The second most common reason is the delay in wound healing for smokers after they have undergone surgery. The other reason is the incidence of Upper Aero-Digestive Tract infection (lung infection, laryngitis) among smokers is high and this can also cause recurrence of the hernia. So it is also recommended to quit smoking once you have been operated for a hernia.

Does Inguinal Hernia occur in women?

Often Inguinal Hernia is perceived as a disease that is reserved only for the male population. Inguinal Hernia occurs also in women. However, the majority of the population that is affected by inguinal hernia are males. Inguinal Hernia occurs when abdominal tissue or a part of an intestine bulges and protrudes through the lower abdominal wall and into the inguinal canal. This occurs predominantly in males due to the fact that males by birth have a small hole in the groin muscles through which the blood vessels and spermatic cord passes to the testicles. This is why Inguinal Hernia occurs more in male than female. In conclusion, Inguinal Hernia does occur in females but it is more common in males.

Does lifting heavy weights cause Inguinal Hernia?

When a part of the intestine or other abdominal tissues protrudes through the weakness near the groin area it is referred to as an inguinal hernia. The hernia breach is exactly at the right or left inguinal canal. Sometimes there is a hernia on both the side of the abdomen.
An inguinal hernia is the most common hernia of all the hernia types present. It is estimated that it is 70% of all the hernia types. In that 70%, almost all of an inguinal hernia happens in men.
There is a common misconception among people that weight lifting and lifting heavy objects can cause Inguinal Hernia. A hernia is the presence of a hole in your abdominal walls. When you perform strenuous activities like lifting heavy objects, more pressure is applied to the abdominal wall and abdominal tissues tend to protrude out. Hence heavy lifting does not cause Hernia, but it can aggravate the situation.
