Can Hernias occur in children?

An inguinal hernia is a condition where the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes into the inguinal canal which is present near the groin area. A hernia occurs in adult males but also occurs in children too. Herniae has been reported in children even under the age of 4 too. Usually, no medical intervention is required, unless the child experiences having pain while moving, standing or walking.

Children usually walk in a hunched position to reduce the pressure in the groin. This posture is a clue that the child is suffering from a hernia.

What is a Henia mesh and how do they work?

Inguinal Hernia occurs when a part of the intestine tissue protrudes through the weakened muscle or connective tissue. Most Hernia's require surgical correction while others do not. Most hernia's require a surgical mesh. Surgical mesh is a device that is used to hold and provide support to the weakened and damaged tissue.

Surgical meshes are made using synthetic or animal tissue. Synthetic surgical meshes are available in knitted and non knitted forms. Animal derived surgical meshes utilize animal tissue like intestine, skin and other tissues that are cleaned and dis infected for medical use. Surgical meshes are available in absorb-able and non absorb-able configurations. The non absorb-able mesh will not degrade over time and will provide permanent support to the tissue. The absorb-able mesh will degrade over time. As the mesh degrades, new tissue will grow and provide support.

Do all Hernia need surgical repair?

Inguinal Hernia is the protrusion of the intestine or abdominal tissues through the weakened tissue near the groin area. The hernia breach can occur either on the right or left inguinal canal. Sometimes the breach can occur on both sides of the abdomen

Do all Hernia need surgical repair?
Hernia once occurred cannot heal on its own. Hernia definitely needs surgical correction. The location and severity of the Hernia differ from person to person. Sometimes some patients require immediate surgical correction while others can delay the surgery by days, months and even years. Some people might never need surgery if the hernia is small and the symptoms are negligible. For people with small hernia who experience zero to minimal symptoms are usually asked to wait and watch for symptoms to occur. The decision to postpone the Hernia repair surgery can and should be advised by a Doctor.
